Luxury travel is incomplete without taking a journey in these beautiful trains in India. Hence we decided to write about Luxury Trains in India. Travelling in these trains is one of the best ways to explore villages, coastal areas, forests, archaeological places, monuments and historic cities. The Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway in the world. These are very expensive journey trains and are mainly organised for luxury travellers. But we can always dream to travel one day in these trains.

The luxury trains operated by the Indian Railways are The Palace on Wheels, The Maharaja Express, The Golden Chariot, Royal Rajasthan on Wheels and The Deccan Odyssey.

Top Luxury Trains in India

Palace on Wheels

It was the first luxury train started on 26th January 1982. In 2009 it was relaunched again with a completely new outlook. Each coach has 4 twin bedroom suites. This train has around 14 salons, two restaurants, an exotic spa and other world class amenities. The total tour cost ranges from Rs.50,000/- per person to Rs.5,00,000/- per person per journey. The journey ranges from 8 days to 13 days. The journey starts from Delhi–Udaipur-Sawai-Madhopur-Chittorgarh-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Bharatpur-Agra-Delhi.

The Maharaja Express

The Maharaja Express is in operation since 2010. This train offers 5 itineraries, all of which either begin or end in Delhi. Every morning the train arrives at a different station and provides a whole lot of excursion around that place. These trains also have pan India journeys and 2 golden triangle journeys. Currently, this is the most recent and expensive train in India. The tour cost is Rs.2.75 lakhs to Rs.10 lakhs per person per Journey. The four major journeys by this train are 1. Princely India (8 days) – Its travel route is Mumbai-Vadodara-Udaipur-Bikaner-Jaipur-Ranthambore-Agra-Delhi.

 

  • Royal India (8 days) –

Its travel route is Delhi-Agra-Ranthambore-jaipur-Bikaner-Jodhpur-Udaipur-Vadodara-Mumbai.

  • Classical India (7 days) –

  • Its travel route is Delhi-Agra- Gwalior-Khajuraho-Bandhavgarh-Varanasi-Lucknow-Delhi.
  • Royal Sojourn (8 days) –

  • Its travel route is Delhi- Jaipur-Kota-Ranthambore-Agra-Delhi.

The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels

This luxury train operates in the state of Rajasthan. The train was launched in 2009. Some of the tourist attractions it covers are Hawa Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Ranthambhor National Park, Agra fort and the Taj Mahal. The tour is for 8 days and costs around Rs.50,000/- to Rs.80,000/- per person per journey.

The Golden Chariot

The Golden Chariot connects Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This train has 19 coaches and is coloured in purple and gold. It is the only train in India to have wifi connectivity. The tour is for 7 days and cost around Rs.25,000/- to Rs.50,000/- per person per journey. The destinations covered are:

  1. a) Pride of South (7 days) – Bangalore-Mysore-Hampi-Belur-Kabini-Badami-Goa-Bangalore.
  2. b) Southern Splendour (7 days) – Bangalore-Chennai-Mamallapuram-Pondicherry-Tiruchirapalli-Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram-Poovar-Kochi-Kerala Backwaters.

The Deccan Odyssey

The Deccan odyssey is a luxury train which journeys through Maharashtra and Goa. It starts from Mumbai and travels to Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Goa, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Solapur, Nanded, Aurangabad, Nasik, Ajanta-Ellora, Pune and then back to Mumbai. There is another blue train called as “The Indian Maharaja-Deccan Odyssey” and its runs from Mumbai to Delhi. The tour cost is around Rs.3Lakhs to Rs.8Lakhs per person per journey. For the Heritage of Maharashtra tour, the cost is around Rs.50,000/- per person.

All the above trains are luxury trains and it is a life time opportunity to travel by these trains. We hope and wish that one day each one of us experiences these luxurious train journeys. Most of the times it is beyond the reach of the higher middle class as well. But nevertheless, it is an experience that is worth enjoying.
