We are already in the midst of the summer season. It is vacation time and families have planned their yearly vacations. Many of us, especially children love the sun, sea and the sand. Children love the beach and spend long hours in the heat of the sun. Though it is not advisable to be in the sun for a long time, children love to play in the water or play on the beach.

With all this enjoyment, at the end of the day, you will find yourself and your loved ones badly tanned. Sometimes the sun rays are so severe that the skin on the face and around the nose starts peeling off. While it is fine to enjoy and soak in the sun, it is advisable to protect the skin in the following way:

  1. Apply a good waterproof sunscreen which has SPF of 50 or more.
  2. Choose a good sunscreen with a broad spectrum, high SPF (sun protection factor) and which is paraben free.
  3. Wear a full length swimwear or carry an umbrella or hat or sun glasses, which will protect the skin when you are in the sun.

Though sun tanning takes time to heal and does not provide instant results, some homemade natural remedies followed persistently can yield some good and fast results. Though there are many cosmetic and artificial sun tan removal creams, the best way to remove sun tan is through natural and homemade remedies, which give good results without any side effects.

Bengal gram pack.

Mix half cup of Bengal gram with 1tsp of turmeric powder. Add little rosewater and milk to make a fine paste. Apply it on the face and leave it on for around 20 minutes. Wash the face with cold water. Bengal gram is a natural scrub for exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells, while turmeric will add glow to the skin.

Cucumber Pack.

Cucumber is a natural coolant as it has more than 90% water. Take half cup of grated cucumber or cucumber juice. Add 1tbsp each of lemon juice and rosewater. Mix this well and apply it on the face, neck, and the other tanned parts of the body. Lemon juice, which is rich in vitamin C and citric acid, helps in lightening the skin and the dark spots. The cucumber juice and the rosewater act as cooling agents, which helps in soothing the skin. Rinse it off after 20 minutes with cold water. You can apply it practically every day to get good skin results.

Orange and Yogurt Pack.

Orange is rich in vitamin C and thus helps in regenerating new skin cells. It helps in improving the skin tone and texture. Yogurt is a natural bleach and moisturiser. Take half cup of orange juice or pulp and add 2tbsp of Yogurt, 2tbsp of rosewater and 2tbsp of lemon juice. Mix all this into a fine paste and apply it on the face, neck, hands and legs. Keep it for around 30 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. This will help in lightening the skin and removing the sun tan.

Aloe vera and Multani Mitti Pack.

Aloe vera gel or juice has many advantages. It is a natural cleanser and helps in lightening the skin tone. Fuller earth (Multani Mitti) is one of the best skin care ingredients.  This mud pack helps in cooling and soothing the skin of any irritation, rash, sun burns etc.

Take 3tbsp of Fuller earth with 2tbsp of aloe vera pulp, 2tbsp of rose water, 2tbsp of ripe papaya pulp and 2tbsp of yogurt. Mix it well and make a thick paste. Apply it on the face, neck and other parts of the body. Let it dry for about 30 minutes and then slowly rinse off the paste with cold water. You will feel refreshed after applying this face pack.

Rice flour and tomato pulp pack.

Rice flour helps to soothen and soften the skin. It further helps in removing the dark spots, sun tan, and other skin pigmentation problems. It has good anti-aging properties. Rice flour is used in many Asian beauty treatments, as it helps in keeping the skin youthful.

Take 4tbsp of rice flour, 3tbsp of fresh tomato pulp, 2tbsp of rosewater, pinch of turmeric, 1tbsp of lemon juice and 1tbsp of yogurt. Mix all the ingredients well into a thick paste. You can add more rosewater to make it into a thick paste. Apply it on the face, neck and other parts of the body. Keep it for around 20 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water.

Potato and Lemon pack.

Potatoes are loaded with vitamins, minerals, proteins and fibre. Potatoes help in lightening the skin tone. Take 3tbsp of potato juice and add 1tbsp of lemon juice, 1tbsp of rosewater and 2tbsp of oat meal. Mix all the ingredients well and apply it on the face and the other parts of the body. Leave it on for around 30 – 35 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water.

Coconut water and sandalwood packs.

Coconut water is loaded with vitamins, minerals and is high in antioxidant and cooling properties. It is not only good for drinking but also has great skin benefits. Sandalwood paste is a natural skin cleanser which helps in removing the dead skin cells and also gives a glow to the skin.

Take 2tbsp of sandalwood powder, 3tbsp coconut water, 1tbsp of rosewater, 1tbsp of almond oil and 1tsp of turmeric. Mix all the ingredients well and form a thick paste. Apply it on your face and other parts of the body. Keep it on for around 25 minutes and then wash it off with cold water.
