Let us understand what is a digital detox?

A digital detox means switching of all your gadgets such as smartphones, mobiles, tablets, laptops, computers etc., for a certain specified period of time as determined by you. It should be a minimum of 24 hours and there is no upper limit.

Let us first look at some of the ill-effects of digital technology on our lives.

  1. Bright Screens affect our eyes and vision in the long run.
  2. Constant use of smartphones and other gadgets has resulted in headaches and migraine.
  3. Constantly staring at bright screens has resulted in the production of melatonin leading to sleep disorders.
  4. Constant sitting and slouching has led to spinal, neck and back problems.
  5. Constantly being on smartphones or gadgets does not give the brain enough time to rest and recover and thus inspite of not doing any productive work, our body still feels stressed out.
  6. Research indicates that constantly being on social media has increased anxiety, depression, stress and other life style diseases.

In spite of all these negative effects, technology is important and useful if used appropriately. It is time we had a good digital detox by switching off all our electronic gadgets. Digital detox is not a one-time activity but needs to be done as frequently as possible for e.g., at least once a week.

Motivate yourself to stay off technology.

First and foremost motivate yourself to stay off technology. Write down the reasons why you want to do a detox. For e.g. you need to refresh and rejuvenate, focus on health and wellness or spend quality undisturbed time with the family etc.

Remember the days when technology was not everywhere.

It is important to remind ourselves of the days when things got done without the usage of technology. We were still in touch with close friends and family, without social media. Use the traditional methods of recreation that you once enjoyed like going for an adventure trek, nature walk, plain street shopping or watching a theatre play etc. When you make these small changes, you will find that you still enjoy life to the fullest, without technology.

Make a digital detox plan.

It is very important to plan your digital detox time. Weekends and vacations are a great time to plan a digital detox. You can tell your family, friends and colleagues that you would be unavailable during that time, well in advance.

Plan all the activities for the day, so that you do not get tempted. Keep all your gadgets out of your reach and just enjoy nature walking, reading a book, working on your old hobby or just catching up with your family.

Time to get rid of your addictions.

If you are addicted to social media, smartphones or games, just avoid using them after the switch off. Initially you might be tempted and feel very uneasy, but just stay focussed on the other planned things and these feelings will ease off.

Keep all your Smartphones and other gadgets out of your reach.

Once you have decided on going in for a digital detox, keep all these tempting gadgets out of your reach. Keep your phone away. If you use your phone as an alarm clock, it is time to go in for a traditional alarm clock, for a change. Keeping gadgets out of your reach will solve half your problems.

Set small targets.

Set a small target for your digital detox. Start with a few hours in a day and then move to a day or more. You also need to gradually reduce the usage of your gadgets, before you start the digital detox. Give yourself one specific time in the day to check your emails or messages or social media. Encourage and reward yourself when you are able to achieve the target set.

You can also plan to go for a weekend to a remote beautiful place which has no network coverage. This experience will give you an insight on how life can be beautiful, without the abuse of technology.

These are the top 6 ways of going in for a digital detox which can help you refresh and rejuvenate without the constant interference of technology. Learn to enjoy life without sharing every detail of your life on facebook and other social media. Finally, we would encourage everyone who is heavily dependent on gadgets to try a digital detox and see its positive impact on your life.
