Spicy Goan Meat Ball Curry

Today we will be sharing about one of the most favorite dish in a goan home , the Spicy Goan meatball curry. Goans call it their comfort food and cook it frequently at home. A Goan style delicious meatball in a spicy gravy.

The goan meatball curry recipe is straight forward and simple. First combine all the meatball ingredients and then prepare the curry step by step. I decided early on in my recipe to add the meatball after cooking the curry . This will not want to overcook the meatballs and make it dry.

Meat ball curry is mostly made during festival season like  Christmas and Easter.This recipe has been passed down from my late grandmother and she used to make it during Christmas or on some special occasions

I am sure, you will also make someone happy with this spicy and authentic goan meatball curry.

For the meat ball:

½ kg chicken/ mutton mince

½ tsp turmeric powder

2 onions (minced)

3 green chillies (minced)

4 flakes of garlic (minced)

1 inch ginger (sliced)

1 onion ( sliced)

Curry leaves

Bunch of coriander and mint leaves

  • Grind mince fine – Mix turmeric, minced onion, green chillies, ginger, garlic, coriander, mint leaves.
  • Form into small size  balls
  • Deep fry and  keep  aside.

For the meat curry:

½ coconut

10 – 12  kashmiri chillies

½ tsp cumin

1 tbsp coriander seeds

1 tbsp khus khus

½ tsp pepper corns

½ tsp turmeric

½ inch ginger

4 flakes garlic

2 medium onions (chopped)

1 tomato (chopped)


A ball of tamarind

  • Roast the coconut, chillies, cumin, coriander, khus khus, coriander in a dry frying pan.
  • Grind all this together with turmeric, ginger, garlic and  tamarind.
  • Fry the sliced onion
  • Add the  ground masala.
  • Now Add curry leaves and cover with lid .
  • Put little water on the lid.
  • When it comes to a boil add the meat balls and cook.
  • When almost ready add salt to taste and little water depending upon the thickness of the gravy.
  • Your Spicy Goan Meat ball curry is ready to be relished with bread , roti or rice.
