If you have washable curtains, soak them in cold water with a liquid detergent for about 10 minutes. Rinse and wash the curtains as recommended. Delicate and net curtains should be given a delicate wash. Hang them on a clothes hanger so that they maintain their shape.

Loose covers and Cushion covers

First clean the covers with a vacuum cleaner, while they are in place on the furniture. Remove the covers and hand wash or dry lean them according to instructions. Hang the covers to dry and press with an iron while the fabric is slightly damp.

Stain Removals

Remove the excess stains immediately. Treat stains by dabbing rather than rubbing them. Work from outside towards the centre. Treat stains from the underside of the fabric while simultaneously holding a piece of absorbent cloth or paper on the outer surface of the fabric. Apply stain removers with a piece of white cloth.

Most stain removers and cleansing agents are poisonous and dangerous to inhale. Do not drench the whole fabric with stain removers.

Greasy oil stains

Scrape off any residue with a blunt knife and blot the fabric with an absorbent tissue. Treat the area with an absorbent grease solvent. Alternatively, sprinkle talcum powder over the area to absorb the oil or grease. Brush off the powder after the oil has been absorbed. Apply the stain remover on the stained part.

Non greasy stains

Remove as much of the residue as possible with a blunt knife and blot the area with an absorbent paper. Rinse or Sponge with cold water and then use the stain remover.

Chewing gum

Solidify the gum by holding a bag of ice cubes over the area. Once the gum is hardened, it will come off the fabric easily.

Lipstick stain

Scrape off the excess and dab eucalyptus oil on the stain. After an hour, rinse the fabric and wash as recommended.

Surface Maintenance

Paints

Most painted surfaces can be wiped clean without any difficulty. Make sure that the surface is in good condition before attempting to clean it. Oil based paints tend to be more robust than water based paints. These can be usually washed down or lightly scrubbed to remove the surface dirt.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper has many finishes, some of which are hardwearing and can be scrubbed, while others get spoilt with the slightest abrasions. Washable wallpaper is coated with glaze so that the surface is sponge able. Vinyl wallpapers are also washable. When it is not possible to clean, apply a fresh patch of the same wallpaper or replace the complete section of the wallpaper.

Tiling

Tiles are one of the strongest parts of your house. A properly tiled surface will last for a long time. It is the grout that tends to suffer wear and tear and become discoloured.

Dirty grouting does not need to be replaced. It can be renewed with a whitener. You can remove the dirt with a scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush together a warm solution. When the grout has dried, apply a grout whitener.

Daily sweeping and mopping the floor with a liquid floor cleaner can help maintain the cleanliness and the shine of the tiles.

Carpets and Rugs

Flooring surfaces tend to be subjected to a great deal of wear and tear. They accumulate dirt unless they are regularly maintained. Carpets and vegetable fibre matting always look better and last longer, if they are vacuumed once a week.

There are carpet shampoos available in the market which can help in cleaning the carpet. Clean individual stains as soon as they occur. Use a small amount of cleansing agent on the stain. Vacuum the area and sponge it with a detergent solution and rinse off the detergent thoroughly. Rugs can also be cleaned in the same manner.

These are some easy home cleaning methods for different types of household things. The above is the Checklist for a quick DIY home maintenance. These tips and tricks can help us save money and keep our things in a good condition.
