Proteins: an important part of your daily diet

Today, we will talk about Proteins and why the same needs to be an integral part of our daily diet. This is Part 2 of our series on Healthy Eating.

The first part was on the Importance of Good Carbohydrates

When it comes to proteins, people have a lot of misconceptions. Just yesterday, I was having a conversation with a friend who happened to mention that she consumes 2-3 protein shakes daily. A lot of people consume more protein than what their bodies actually need. Remember anything in excess is bad for health. A lack of protein in the human diet weakens your body and nervous system, while an excess of protein puts additional pressure on your kidneys and digestive system.

Consuming protein keeps one full for a longer period of time and thus one can avoid the need to constantly consume food.

A normal Indian male physique can absorb around 14 to 17 grams of protein at a time. The human body ideally needs about 1 gram of protein per kilo of body weight i.e. If you weigh 65kgs then you would need around 65gms of protein in a day.

These quantities can be easily obtained in a balanced diet. In exceptional cases, wherein a person is an athlete or a sports person or a body builder, the amount of protein could vary according to the sports regime one follows.

Mentioned below are some indicators which tell you that you may need more protein in your daily diet:

1. Tiredness
2. Feeling weak.
3. Skin and hair fall related issues
4. You have more flab on your body.

The above indicators could vary from individual to individual. Besides this, there could be other reasons as well and hence it becomes imperative to carefully observe your body and make the necessary changes in your diet.

There are nine main kinds of amino acids. A complete protein diet should contain all these nine kinds of amino acids.(e.g.Egg, Chicken, fish etc) In a vegetarian diet soyabean, legumes are good examples of protein. Normally plant foods, individually do not have all these 9 essential amino acids and hence it is best to combine plant foods with other foods like dal, roti or brown rice.

Proteins

Some of the foods which have good protein content in them are:

· Almonds, walnuts, peanuts, cashew nuts and other nuts.

· Spinach and green leafy vegetables
· Lentils and other dals
· Milk, cheese, curd and other dairy products.
· Whole grains like millets, ragi, bajra etc.

The above are some good protein rich foods that could be incorporated in your daily diet. The right quantity intake will meet the protein requirement for the body.
