What are the options available to children after 10th Standard?

Usually in the month of June, the 10th grade results are declared and parents are faced with the important decision of deciding the best career paths for their children depending on their interests and abilities. Careful planning at this stage is essential.

 

Below are some key factors to bear in mind while deciding a child’s career after 10th standard:

1. The grades obtained in 10th std.
2. Discussing the pros and cons of the child’s field of interest.
3. The confidence level and ability of the child.
4. Taking the help of educational fairs, career counsellors, advice from parents of other children who have taken similar courses to understand the realistic difficulties faced etc.

One also needs to know the various educational streams available so that the transition is easy.

The following are the main streams offered:

1. Science Stream with Mathematics / Biology / Computer / Bio-Math
2. Commerce Stream
3. Arts or Humanities Stream

1. Science stream

The science stream offers good career options to students after 12th standard. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are the major subjects taken by students who wish to pursue a career in engineering. On the other hand, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the major subjects taken by students who wish to pursue Medical sciences as a career option. A student has to take at least six subjects including English.

2.Commerce Stream

The Commerce stream is the study of doing business. This stream has been increasingly chosen by a large number of students after the completion of 10th standard, due to its attractiveness in terms of finding early and suitable employment. Some of the key subjects taught in the Commerce stream are economics, accountancy, business studies, audit, income tax, banking, cost accounting and business law. Some of the popular graduate courses offered through the commerce stream are B.Com, BBA, BMS, BBM, CFA, CA, ICWA, CFP etc. A student has to select six subjects along with English and one additional subject. There are some competitive examinations which a student can appear after passing the 10th examination which are the Foundation courses for C.S, C.A and ICWA.

3. Arts and Humanities

The Arts stream has a wide range of subjects like Psychology, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology etc. This stream is very exciting for those who want to pursue a career in mass media, politics, journalism, human psychology, literature, sociology, social service, economics etc.
