Important tips to organise the storage space in your house

Cupboards, shelves and other storage space play an important part in every home. We need to position them carefully so that we can make full use of the existing storage space and fit extra storage units in the unused part of our homes.

Let’s take a look at some of the important aspects while organising the storage space in your house.

 Organising Cupboards:

You need to take care of cupboards and their contents. Never overload shelves or heavy items on the top of the cupboards. Group the contents properly so that they are easily accessible. Always clear and sort the cupboard regularly to create space and throw away the unnecessary items.
You can have different types of cupboards like built-in cupboards or free standing cupboards, depending upon the requirement. Free standing cupboards are better as it is easy to reposition them when you are changing the layout of the room or even moving homes.

Some of the things to be remembered are:

1. Ensure that there is sufficient space in front of the cupboard to open the doors fully.

2. Place cupboards with sliding doors in areas that don’t need much clearance space.

3. Use small cupboards in recessed areas like a window bay.

4. Use corner cupboards, dressing tables or drawers in the beds to provide for that extra storage space.

 Organising Wardrobe space

You can fit a great deal in a wardrobe if you make proper use of the horizontal as well as the vertical space. Before hanging or stacking items, group them by length or width and separate those to be folded. Put the garments in the same place every time to keep the space tidy.

Some of the things to be remembered are:

1. Do not overload hanging rails or shelves. Leave enough space to remove and replace clothes and accessories.

2. Make use of all the space, including the insides of the doors. If you hang items on the doors then use the doors to hang only light weight items like ties, costume jewellery, scarfs and shawls etc.

3. If your children share a wardrobe, assign different colours to each child. For e.g., one of the doors could be painted in brown colour and the other door could be painted in cream colour. Each child will keep their belongings on their coloured side of the wardrobe.

4. Cover delicate items like expensive clothes, fragile garments in cotton covers or plastic bags.

5. Keep your expensive shoes in boxes and attach its picture on the box so that you can find it instantly.

6. Non creasing clothes such as sweaters should be rolled and kept at one side of the shelves rather than folding them.

7. Fit a mirror on the wardrobe door. Choose a door with its back to the light so that the light falls on you and not on the mirror.

Organising Shelves

Shelves can enhance the look of the room and at the same time provide storage space. They are made of different materials like wood for holding books and toughened glass for displaying photos or potted plants.

Some of the things to be remembered are:

a) Do not overload shelves as they might break or sag.

b) Keep objects close to the place where they are likely to be used. Avoid keeping frequently used items on high places.

c) Create shelves within shelves to store small items for e.g., place the spice rack at the back while using the front side as the cutlery holder for big spoons, spatula etc.

d) Use open shelves to divide a large room for different functions. For e.g., keep open shelves between your living area and dining area. Make the shelves deep so that both sides of the unit can be used for displaying objects.

 Organising Drawers

Drawers provide many different types of storage spaces and can be large or small, deep or shallow to suit your requirements. It is also possible to divide the space inside the drawers so that you can see the contents at a glance.

Some of the things to be remembered are:

1. Fit the drawers properly in the furniture layout of the rooms.

2. Allow enough room for an adult to kneel and open the drawer completely.

3. Use shallow and deep drawers according to your requirements.

4. Use deep fitting sturdy drawers to store heavy items.

5. You can divide the drawer into multiple smaller boxes to keep small items neatly.

6. Labelling the drawers will help us know the contents in the drawers.

7. Line drawers with lining paper so that you can quickly replace the soiled paper.

The above are some of the important ways in which you can organise the storage space in your house. You know the needs and the limitations of your house, so you are the best person to take appropriate decisions in making the best use of the storage space in your house.
