As we all know, your dream becomes a reality only by your actions. And your actions are mainly controlled by your habits.

Robert Ringer has said that “Life is nothing more but a sum total of many successful years, a successful year is a sum total of many successful months, a successful month is a sum total of many successful days. That’s why it is important to practice good habits every day.” This will help you in being successful in your life. Your habits will decide whether you can achieve your dream or not. Spend some time daily with them.

No matter how busy you are, you need to set aside some time for them daily. The family dinner and family prayer time is a great way of bonding. A family that prays and eats together stays together. Maintain a daily routine wherein they can share things that have happened in the day, both good and bad. They will trust you more and seek your advice on anything that’s bothering them. This daily habit will go a long way in family bonding, healthy eating, being grateful and thankful to everyone around them.

Keep it simple and realistic.

When you are encouraging your child to form a good habit, keep it simple and realistic.  Remember that children are small and tend to forget things. You need to constantly remind them patiently and gracefully.

Every child is unique and different and so the time taken to learn a new habit will vary. Do not expect your child to be well behaved all the time. They are bound to make mistakes and so you need to constantly forgive and teach them.

Most of the times when parents are high achievers, they tend to have too many unrealistic expectations from their children. This results in disillusionment, disappointment, and rejection. Most of the time, we parents want our children to behave like adults, which is not possible as they are only craving for your attention. This is a normal child’s behavior.

Keep a positive outlook.

Keeping a positive outlook in your parenting journey is a key thing for success. Everything you teach them will have a lasting impact on their minds. Try to be positive by making your home environment happy, joyful, safe and stress-free.

Some of the things that can help you create a positive environment are listed below:

  • Encourage cooperation and not competition.
  • Keep all communication channels open for sharing and advice.
  • Avoid using negative and wrong words as this will lead to low self-esteem, fear and a pessimistic attitude.
  • Clearly set aside family time like dinner time, prayer time, reading stories, weekends or monthly dinners etc.
  • Always try to listen to your children patiently and give them the freedom to take age appropriate decisions.
  • Never compare your children.
  • Always encourage them to learn from their mistakes and applaud their achievements.
  • Be approachable so that you are the first one that they turn to in times of difficulty and advice.

Have strong family rules.

It is important to set down strong family rules early in life.  These family rules will form the basic foundation for cultivating good habits.

Some of the family rules that you can set are listed below –

  • Prayer time together with the family.
  • Scheduled time for study and play.
  • Respecting and honoring elders and parents at all times, even if you disagree with their views.
  • No use of bad language.
  • Eating healthy meals comprising of soups, vegetables etc., that is served.
  • 10 minutes daily cleaning of their room and books.
  • Being grateful to God and thanking him for at least 5 good things daily.

These are some of the things that we follow in our house. At times it is difficult, but children know that they need to adhere to these rules.

Keep a reward chart.

As you will be teaching and inculcating new habits in your child, there will be times when they will be good and finish their tasks on time. It is important to encourage them by rewarding them appropriately. You can keep a chart of their daily activities and give points.

At the end of the week, if they exceed the required number of points then they could get their favorite dessert or a book etc. However at the same time ensure that you don’t always reward them with worldly things but with something more important, like a card or a hug or a word of appreciation.

Use kind language.

Encourage them early in life to use phrases like Good Morning, Thank you, Please, Welcome, Sorry etc. Using good words and kind language will always help them in the future.

Read to them good moral stories, which would inspire them to behave correctly and in a disciplined manner with others. Reading stories loudly will also give them a command over the language.

Encourage free play time and physical activity.

Always keep aside free time for children to play or to get involved in any sporting activity like swimming, football etc. This will help them to have a healthy lifestyle, which will keep them fit.

Get your child involved in volunteering and in community projects.

Teach your children early in life about kindness, generosity and to be a giver. Instil in them values such as “to give” and “to help” others. These values will be a great source of joy and contentment later on in life.

You can take them to visit an orphanage or an old age home or involve them in other activities such as “plant a tree campaign” in the neighbourhood. Get them motivated to be involved in a good and noble cause.

Teach them Money Management skills.

It is important to teach your children the value of money early in life. Give them a fixed amount of money every month, when they are old enough and tell them to manage their own expenses. For the younger children, you can give them a piggy bank so that they learn how to save money.

Some important points of money management are as follows :

  1. Teach them to save and spend money.
  2. Buying things at the appropriate time and to avoid impulsive buying.
  3. Teach them budgeting.

Responsibility.

Teach your child to be responsible for their things. They need to know the value of things and appreciate the same. Give them small things that they can keep safe and ask them later about it.

Be firm when you are teaching them to be responsible for their actions. They need to know what is acceptable and what is not. Your child should understand the consequences of not behaving properly.

These are 10 good habits that can be inculcated in children. Remember to maintain a balance between being strict and easy going. Share your parenting experience with other parents and learn from best practices and follow what suits you and your child.
